Abstract

The Holy Qurān is known for its eloquence and rhetoric but this aspect is often ignored or neglected. This article is an attempt to highlight this aspect. Muhassanāt-e- ma’nwiyah (the qualities and advantages of a word) is, in fact, a sub branch of Rhetoric or Ilm-ul-Badī’. Ilm-ul- Badī’ is a kind of Eloquence (Balāghat). This branch of rhetoric underlines the qualities and advantages associated with a word and its use. It also underscores its reasons and rationale. This article focusses on the Ittibaq from Muhassanāt-e-ma’nwiyah used and found in Amsaal  of the Holy Quran. At the same time it explains their rationale. It quotes the verse of the Quran which contains an Aṭṭibāq from Muhassanāt-e-ma’nwiyah and then analysis it giving emphasis to the shades and implied meanings (connotations) with their logic. This attempt will help the serious reader of the Holy Qurān to have a deeper and fuller comprehension and appreciation of the meanings of the Qurān. A study of the science of Qurānic Rhetoric makes the reading of the Qurān a more fascinating and beneficent experience. It also helps to catch a glimpse of the broader spectrum and profundity of the Qurānic teachings.
