Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive and coherent introduction to the life, scholarly contributions, and hadith legacy of Imam al-Ṭabarānī (d. 360 AH), one of the foremost muhaddithun of the fourth Islamic century. The study addresses scholarly discussions about his birthplace whether Tiberias (Ṭabariyyah) or Acre (ʿAkkā) and traces his lineage to the Yemeni tribe of Lakhm, explaining the origin of his nisbah, al-Ṭabarānī. It further clarifies his jurisprudential affiliation, affirming his adherence to the Shāfiʿī school while critically addressing claims of a Hanbali connection. The article highlights Imam al-Ṭabarānī’s relentless pursuit of knowledge through extensive scholarly travels across Syria, the Hijaz, Iraq, Yemen, and Persia. His extraordinary network of over a thousand teachers and an equally large number of students demonstrates his pivotal role in hadith transmission. The study emphasizes his prolific authorship, particularly the Three Muʿjams (al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ, and al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr), which remain foundational sources for later hadith scholarship. Importantly, this article is written to serve as guidance for contemporary researchers, showing how Imam al-Ṭabarānī’s dedication, rigor, and scholarly discipline enabled him to achieve unparalleled mastery in hadith studies. By studying his life and works, modern scholars are encouraged to emulate his perseverance, meticulousness, and commitment to knowledge. The article concludes by discussing his death, longevity, and enduring intellectual legacy, reinforcing that his scholarly example remains a timeless source of inspiration for rigorous academic endeavor.
